Top 7 Causes of House Fires

Understanding what causes home fires is the first step in prevention. These are the most frequent causes our fire restoration team encounters:

  • Cooking equipment – Unattended stoves, ovens, and grease fires are the top causes of home fires.
  • Heating systems – Space heaters, fireplaces, and furnaces can spark fires when misused or poorly maintained.
  • Electrical problems – Overloaded outlets, outdated wiring, and faulty lighting fixtures are major fire risks.
  • Laundry appliances – Lint buildup in dryers can easily ignite and spread flames quickly.
  • Smoking materials – Cigarettes and other smoking items remain a leading cause of fatal house fires.
  • Intentional fires (arson) – Deliberately set fires can destroy property in minutes.
  • Lightning strikes – Lightning-induced fires, though rare, can ignite attics or dry roofing materials.

As a fire spreads, it damages far more than what’s visible. Synthetic materials release harmful toxins and gases when burned, creating unsafe conditions and extensive cleanup challenges.

Common Types of Fire Damage

Fire and smoke affect every corner of a property—often in invisible ways. Here’s what our team commonly addresses during restoration:

  • Burned structural elements – Fire can compromise framing, drywall, flooring, and cabinetry.
  • Damaged personal belongings – Clothing, furniture, keepsakes, and electronics may be scorched or smoke-damaged.
  • Soot residue – Soot travels through HVAC systems and settles on walls, ceilings, and vents—especially from furnace malfunctions.
  • Smoke damage – Smoke can be wet (sticky, low-heat fires) or dry (powdery, high-heat fires), each requiring a different cleanup method.
  • Odors and toxins – Smoke and burned materials release strong, lingering odors and toxic particles that are unsafe to breathe.

Our 5-Step Fire Restoration Process

1.

Damage Assessment

We start with the point of origin and remove all charred materials to reduce the odor.
2.

Initial Cleanup

We pack anything that can be saved and move it to an off-site, secure warehouse. Once the property renovation is complete, the items will be cleaned, packed back up, and returned.

3.

Extraction

We remove all damaged flooring, trim, walls, doors, and wiring.
4.

Structure Cleaning

We then clean the structure, which depending on the severity may involve dry ice blasting, sanding, or using a wire brush. Once this is complete, we will ozone and/or thermal fog the property in order to neutralize any residual smoke odor. We then seal the structure with a specific sealer made to trap any residual that may be left.

5.

Restoration

We restore your home to its pre-loss condition, replacing any damaged lumber, drywall, flooring, or windows.
